Pool Filter Cleaning in St. Petersburg, FL

Your pool filter is the unsung hero of pool maintenance. Every gallon of water in your pool passes through it multiple times a day, removing the dirt, debris, oils, and microscopic particles that would otherwise cloud the water and overwhelm your chemistry. When the filter is clean and working properly, everything else in pool care gets easier. When it’s clogged or neglected, every other problem gets worse.

Alpha Pool Service provides professional pool filter cleaning across St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Gulfport, Treasure Island, and the surrounding Pinellas County area. We service all three common filter types (cartridge, DE, and sand) with the equipment and expertise to clean each properly. We’re rated 5.0 stars across 32+ Google reviews.

Why Filter Cleaning Matters

A clogged filter affects your pool in ways that aren’t always obvious until things have gotten bad:

  • Reduced circulation. Water moves more slowly through a dirty filter, which means longer turnover times and worse water quality.
  • Cloudy water. A filter that can’t catch fine particles leaves water looking dull or hazy.
  • Algae growth. Poor circulation creates dead zones where algae thrives.
  • Higher chemical use. When circulation drops, chemicals don’t distribute evenly, so you need more to maintain levels.
  • Pump strain. A pump pushing water through a clogged filter works harder, runs hotter, and wears out faster.
  • Higher energy bills. A struggling pump uses more electricity.
  • Equipment damage. In severe cases, a fully clogged filter can damage the pump or filter housing.

Regular filter cleaning prevents all of these issues with a relatively quick service visit.

Different filter types require different cleaning approaches. Here’s what we do with each.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters use pleated paper cartridges to trap debris. They’re the most common filter type in newer Florida pools because they’re efficient and don’t require backwashing.

Our cartridge filter cleaning service includes:

  • Removing cartridges from filter housing
  • Hosing each cartridge thoroughly with appropriate water pressure to flush out debris
  • Soaking cartridges in cleaning solution for embedded oils, sunscreen residue, and calcium buildup (when needed)
  • Inspecting cartridges for damage, tears, or end-cap separation
  • Reinstalling and verifying proper seal
  • Pressure check after restart

Cartridge replacement timing: Most cartridges last 2 to 5 years with proper cleaning. We tell you well in advance when yours are approaching end-of-life.

DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters

DE filters use a fine powder coating on internal grids to provide the finest filtration available, capable of capturing particles as small as 2 microns. They produce the clearest water of any filter type but require more careful maintenance.

Our DE filter cleaning service includes:

  • Backwashing to remove old DE and debris
  • Disassembling the filter for full cleaning (when needed)
  • Hosing grids thoroughly to remove embedded debris
  • Inspecting grids for tears, damage, or wear
  • Reassembling with proper seal
  • Adding fresh DE powder through the skimmer
  • Pressure check and verification

DE grid replacement timing: Grids typically last 5 to 10 years. We replace as needed.

Sand Filters

Sand filters use a bed of #20 silica sand to trap debris. They’re the most forgiving filter type and

he easiest to maintain, but they don’t filter as fine as DE or cartridge filters.

Our sand filter cleaning service includes:

  • Backwashing to clear trapped debris
  • Rinsing to settle sand bed properly
  • Pressure check before and after
  • Sand inspection through clear backwash port
  • Sand replacement when needed (typically every 5 to 7 years)
  • Filter laterals and underdrain inspection during sand changes

Sand replacement timing: Sand should be replaced every 5 to 7 years for most residential pools. Older sand becomes rounded and loses filtering effectiveness.

Signs Your Filter Needs Cleaning

Don’t wait for problems to worsen. Common signs your filter needs attention:

  • Pressure gauge reading 8 to 10 PSI above the clean baseline. This is the universal sign for “clean me now.”
  • Cloudy or hazy water that won’t clear with normal chemistry adjustments
  • Reduced flow from return jets compared to normal
  • Pump cycling on and off unexpectedly
  • Visible debris bypassing the filter and returning to the pool
  • Algae blooms despite proper chemistry
  • Higher than normal chemical demand
  • Pump running hot to the touch

If you’re seeing any of these, it’s time. The longer a clogged filter runs, the more it stresses your equipment.

Filter Cleaning FAQs

How often should I clean my filter? Cartridge filters typically every 4 to 6 months. DE filters monthly backwash with deep clean every 6 months. Sand filters backwash as needed with annual deep service.

Can I just keep backwashing my filter instead of cleaning it? For sand filters, regular backwashing is the standard maintenance. For cartridge filters, backwashing isn’t possible (no backwash valve) and cartridges must be removed and cleaned. For DE filters, backwashing is part of routine maintenance but doesn’t replace deep cleaning.

My pressure gauge is reading high but the water looks fine. Do I still need to clean? Yes. By the time water quality visibly drops, the filter has been struggling for a while. Pressure is your earliest warning system.

How long does filter cleaning take? Cartridge filters: 30 to 60 minutes. DE filters: 45 to 90 minutes for routine cleaning, longer for full disassembly. Sand filters: 15 to 30 minutes for backwash service, 1 to 2 hours for sand replacement.

Will filter cleaning fix cloudy water? Often, yes. Cloudy water that doesn’t respond to chemistry adjustments is frequently a filter issue.

How much does filter cleaning cost? Cartridge filter cleaning typically runs $75 to $150. DE filter service runs $100 to $200 for routine, more for full grid replacement. Sand filter service runs $50 to $100 for backwash service. Sand replacement runs $250 to $500 depending on filter size.

When should I replace my filter media? Cartridges: 2 to 5 years. DE grids: 5 to 10 years. Sand: 5 to 7 years. We assess and recommend honestly.

What about salt cell cleaning? Salt cells are a different system from filters. We service salt cells as part of regular maintenance for saltwater pool customers.

Do you service older or larger commercial filters? Yes. We work with residential filters and small commercial filters. Larger commercial filters at apartment complexes and amenity pools are quoted individually.

Do you serve my neighborhood? We serve all of Pinellas County. See our Areas We Serve page for details.
